Break a Leg takes place in a lot of the same locations as its predecessor. In the time since the first book, downtown L.A. has kept on decaying, while far-flung suburbs have kept on expanding.

The heart of the story is in the theater district, which still exists today. (See here for details.) The characters also explore a lot of new locations, from Glendale to Catalina Island to other points in between.
