Picture Palace takes place when classic Hollywood was disappearing: the old studio system was fading away, television was taking over, and modern L.A. was taking shape.

L.A.’s downtown theater district still exists today. Some theaters, like the Orpheum and the Los Angeles, are still as beautiful as ever. Others, like the Roxie and the Arcade, are downright decrepit. None of these theaters show first-run films anymore, but some of them do allow tours and/or open their doors for special events. (See here for details.)

Other parts of the city have changed much more dramatically. Bunker Hill, for example, is unrecognizable today. Hollywood has retained some of its old landmarks, like Grauman’s Chinese Theatre and the Hollywood Sign; but others like the Brown Derby are long-gone.
